One might opt for non-alcoholic wine for many reasons. Whether it be sobriety, health-related issues, religious beliefs, pregnancy, or anything else, the reason is no one’s business but the drinker’s. More and more people are choosing to drink less or not at all.

Having a non-alcoholic option that isn’t simply soda or juice can make a person who isn’t drinking feel more included in the festivities, which should always be the goal, which is something I always strive for at any gathering I host. Parties should be all about fun, so I always make sure to have quality non-alcoholic options available. So whether you’re choosing to cut down on alcohol yourself or want a more inclusive bar cart, we salute you.

How is non-alcoholic wine made?

While it has only come into the spotlight in recent years, nonalcoholic wine has been around since 1908, when Carl Jung Jr invented it. The Jung family owned a vineyard in Germany’s Rhine region and started to notice that business was gradually slowing as customers began drinking less. Jung decided it was time to experiment and got to work with his father’s equipment to make wine without alcohol. It was a success. In 1908, he filed a patent for his new winemaking process, and non-alcoholic wine was born.  Today, the process is much more advanced and complex than Jung’s original system, but without it, we might never have had nonalcoholic wine.

Today, non-alcoholic wine is made using the same method as traditional wine, but the alcohol is removed in the final stages of the process. This is done using one of two methods: vacuum distillation or reverse osmosis.

Vacuum distillation

In this process, wine is heated in a vacuum to evaporate the alcohol, which is condensed and collected separately from the wine. While this method effectively removes alcohol, it can also remove some of the wine’s unique flavors and aromas, which is part of the reason non-alcoholic wine has such a different flavor and body than traditional wine. 

Reverse osmosis

The reverse osmosis process, also known as filtration, involves forcing wine through a membrane using tremendous amounts of high pressure. This process creates two separate liquids—one of concentrated wine and one of alcohol and water. The concentrated wine is left without the alcohol and can be consumed on its own.

Looking for a festive, non-alcoholic wine-based cocktail? This non-alcoholic sangria recipe from the website The Mindful Mocktail could be just what you’re looking for.

Ingredients:

  • 1 orange sliced into rings
  • 1 lemon sliced into rings
  • 1 ounce maple syrup or sweetener of choice
  • 1 green apple sliced into wedges
  • 9 ounces orange juice
  • 25-ounce bottle of alcohol-free red wine
  • 18 ounces sparkling beverage such as club soda, Sprite, or ginger ale (optional)

Method:

  1. Place orange, lemon, and sweetener in a large glass pitcher.
  2. Muddle the fruit gently until some of the juice is released. You can use the back end of a wooden spoon if you don’t have a muddler.
  3. Add the apple wedges, orange juice, and non-alcoholic wine.
  4. Stir gently to combine.
  5. Place in the fridge for at least 1 hour or up to 4 hours.
  6. Add additional sweetener if needed.
  7. Just before serving, add the sparkling beverage (if using).
  8. Stir gently and serve.

Perhaps you’re into period English movies (like, say, anything by Jane Austen). If so, you’ve noticed that when it’s time to break out the good stuff (you know, the bottle from the cellar that needs to be decanted), it’s always a wine called "claret." While I do enjoy the occasional Jane Austen movie, I’ve been a more consistent fan of wine -- but for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out what this claret stuff was, why it was so beloved, and where I could get my hands on it. The short answer is that "claret" is basically British slang for red wines from Bordeaux. The long answer involves ancient Romans, Eleanor of Aquitaine, English corruption of the French language, the Hundred Years’ War, and a dry, brick-red rosé that might not yet be on your radar.

The Romans, great champions of the grape themselves, did bring viticulture to the Bordeaux region -- though, to be honest, they were much more interested in the trading potential of the huge natural harbor located in the Gironde River estuary. Once the empire collapsed, so did those trade routes from the Mediterranean to northern Europe. Ultimately, Bordeaux (along with the rest of southwest France) became part of the large, powerful, and independent duchy of Aquitaine. And this is where our claret wine story begins.

There’s always something to be learned in the vast world of wine. Knowing a bit of the language will keep you from getting lost in translation and potentially buying something you might not like. So, while you study up on outstanding regions like Alto Adige and unique styles like white pinot noir, pack this handy term guide with you. The list is a combination of winemaking terminology and the words industry types like to use to describe wines and their very specific styles. It might just expose you to your new favorite bottle or producer.
But first, let's start with wine terminology fundamentals. Someone has poured you a glass of wine, and told you what the varietal is -- maybe it's a malbec or a chardonnay or a blend of different grapes (more on varietals later). What's the first thing you notice? The color -- is the wine butter yellow or brick red? Next comes the nose: What do you smell? Citrus, or perhaps dried cherries?

Now, take your first sip. What's the mouthfeel? Is the wine light or heavy? What other sensations are there besides the taste? If it's a red, there could be tannins, which impart a sandpapery feeling like apple peels or strong black tea. Conversely, white wine's structure usually comes from acidity, which can present like lemon peel or yuzu. Lastly, notice the finish -- does the wine linger on the palate or get out quickly? How do the flavors resolve?
